A committed and independent French family-owned brand since 1950.

Our history began in 1950, when entrepreneur Paul Berthomé partnered with pharmacist Claude Guillon to create the very first baby cleansing milk. It was a technical innovation, but also a way to free up time for parents mainly for women in particular at that time. Our ambition has remained the same for generations: to be by parents' side and make their lives easier with our natural origin care ranges.

1950

Paul Berthomé teamed up with pharmacist Claude Guillon to create the very first cleansing milk specially designed for babies' skin. It was a technical innovation, but also a way to free up time for parents.

1977

Expanscience has begun manufacturing its own plant-based active ingredients (extracts, distillates, oils, butters, powders) using green technologies that respect both people and the environment: molecular distillation and biotechnology.

1982

The Mustela Foundation was created to encourage research and projects on child development and parenting around the world.

2004

Jean-Paul Berthomé, son of the founder, signs the United Nations Global Compact, a pioneering commitment to Social and Environmental Responsibility.

2012

Mustela publishes a groundbreaking global study in the British Journal of Dermatology. It reveals major discoveries about the immaturity of the skin barrier in children under 2 years of age and the 4 skin types we inherit at birth.

2018

Expanscience became the first dermo-cosmetic laboratory in the world to obtain B Corp certification

2019

At the UN Climate Change Conference, Mustela commits to contributing to the achievement of global climate goals by 2050.

2021

Expanscience Laboratories launched its IMPACT strategy to become a regenerative company with a positive IMPACT by 2030/2024

2022

Expanscience became a mission-driven company: a major step in the transition to a positive impact business model

2022

About forty nonprofit and private partners dedicated to supporting all forms of parenthood, including Mustela, joined forces to launch the first Maison des Parents in the heart of Paris.

Composée de quatre essentiels sans parfum, elle est formulée avec de l’huile d’olive bio de Nîmes et dépasse les exigences du label Cosmos Organic grâce à des formules vegan, éco-conçues et très naturelles.

2020 - Mustela lance une expérimentation de vente en vrac, c'est-à-dire de produits non pré-emballés. L'idée ? Aller encore plus loin dans l'écoconception de nos produits et plus particulièrement la réduction des emballages avec un flacon qui s'appelle REVIENS !

2023 - We have joined forces with four other players in the dermo-cosmetics industry to form the “#PharmaRecharge” consortium, offering 15 iconic products for the first time in eco-friendly refillable bottles available in pharmacies!

Our production site since 1957

85% of our products are made in France, at our Epernon site in the Eure-et-Loir department. From our very beginnings, we have chosen to master our entire value chain, from research and manufacturing to marketing, to ensure the quality and safety of our products at every stage.

An independent family-owned company

Today, Mustela remains a family-owned, independent brand: it is owned by the family of Paul Berthomé, the founder of Laboratoires Expanscience, and his son, Jean-Paul, currently heads the company.
Why stay independent?
This strategy simply aims to ensure control of the value chain from A to Z, i.e. from research to marketing. This naturally concerns product safety and quality.
